Mrs. Spivey and her classroom assistant Adrianne Cole welcomed families to their first Soar in 4 summer evening event on June 6th at the South Florida Museum. 9 out of their 11 VPK students for the 2017-18 school year dodged the rain drops to invest the time and energy to build positive relationships for a solid foundation for school success. After introductions the families participated in a morning meeting, had opportunities to experience learning centers, practiced making choices in the dinner line, toured their classroom and visited various learning and play areas in the museum. Mrs. Spivey shared with parents that children’s vocabulary skills are linked to their economic background. “By 3 years of age, there is a 30 million word gap between children from the wealthiest and poorest families.” The Suncoast Summer Book Challenge, sponsored by the Patterson Foundation, was reviewed with the families. Each family received their summer reading log and left with 7 books to read at home. These books will then become part of the families own personal library at their home. Mrs. Spivey modeled reading the book Sky Color by Peter H. Renyolds.
