Vocabulary, pre-emergent literacy skills and orientation was the theme for our first Soar in 4 family event on June 6th. Parents learned what they can do at home to help build their preschoolers vocabularies such as introducing a new word in context so that their child can learn what it means, using facial expressions and gestures, and talking and reading with their child daily. Families downloaded the app Footsteps2Brilliance which will give the families
access to a library of beautifully illustrated animated eBooks written by famous children’s authors along with over 230 educational games. Families also participated in a school tour, meet school staff and learned about Conscious Discipline which is our comprehensive classroom management program and social-emotional curriculum. Families learned that connection requires 4 critical elements – eye contact, presence, touch and playfulness. They also were given an “How Do You Feel” chart to use to discuss and identify how they are feeling. These interactions will help families and their VPK child become familiar with school expectations while have funning and learning together all summer. Each family left with their Suncoast Summer Reading Parent Guide and Reading Log so they can document their reading progress. Our preschool teachers will then build on what the children already know and respond to their interests and reinforce new words at our next Soar in 4 family event.
