Over 450 pre-k, k, first, and second grade students and their family members attended our September Soar in 4 at our three great downtown locations, the South Florida Museum, the ArtCenter and the Central Library. Our theme for each locations was On Your Mark, Get Set, READ! Each location focused on the joys of reading in a variety of different ways. Our hope is that the ideas presented at each Soar in 4 will become a part of each family’s home, togetherness and joy. Children are made readers on the laps of those who love them. Throughout the night parents were given tips on how to support their child as they learn to read. Our literacy activities were interactive and play based and included gloop letters, reading around the museum, drumming syllables, Drop! Splat Letters, instruments and songs, and hip hop. Early literacy can take many forms and in many ways. Research has demonstrated that the most effective reading activities are those where children are actively involved asking and answering questions and making predictions, rather than passively listening. Our Soar in 4 nights have been intentionally designed for family fun and learning and to support classroom learning.
