Congratulation to Steve and Carolyn Roskamp of Freedom Senior Management the recipients of the 2019 Commissioner’s Business Recognition Award! Steve and Carolyn Roskamp became advocates for children’s literacy 3 years ago when they joined the Campaign for Grade Level Reading. Their desire that all children are reading proficiently by the end of third grade has resulted in the Soar in 4 program. The Soar in 4 mission is to ensure children have the opportunities and support they need for success in school and beyond as well as to create a support network for parents, connecting them to community resources for young children’s healthy growth, development and school readiness.
Soar in 4 has grown from one Title I elementary school neighborhood to eight Title I neighborhoods in three short years. This summer, Soar in 4 met ten times at Manatee Country Downtown Central Library and The Bishop Museum of Science and Nature, serving over 2,000 children and families, gave away 2,500 books and provided 1,500 food packages.
Soar in 4 provides interactive play-based literacy engagements for children and families that are connected to classroom standards and are facilitated by classroom teachers and community volunteers. This summer WEDU PBS and PBS KIDS partnered with the Soar in 4 family, with special visits from Curious George and the Man with the Yellow Hat, ELMO and Super Why! greeting families and handing out free books to encourage literacy.
Reading is a complex activity and is best accomplished when it is taught at both home and school. Steve and Carolyn Roskamp, and their commitment to Soar in 4, ensures that families are able to support literacy on their own and promote a love of reading at home. Additional publication details:
