Our featured book for July 2020 is Malala’s Magic Pencil by Malala Yousafzai, which tells the story of Malala’s childhood dream to own a magic pencil to make her life a little bit easier: to help her get an extra hour of sleep, or to make her loved ones happy. However, as she grew older, Malala realized that there were many terrible things in the world that she could make right with the help of a magic pencil. In this book, she finds her voice — and realizes she can use it to make a difference.

Below is a video of Malala’s Magic Pencil featuring “shared reading,” an interactive reading experience that occurs when children join in or share the reading of a book or other text while guided and supported by an adult or older experienced reader. The experienced reader explicitly models the skills of proficient readers, including reading with fluency and expression, and engages the child in dialogue throughout the book.
