Our featured book for August 2020 is Ten Magic Butterflies by Danica McKellar, about ten flower friends that have a night of excitement that mixes a little math with a lot of magic. As each flower turns into a butterfly, children will discover different ways to group numbers to create ten, an essential building block of math, all while watching each flower’s dream come true.

Below is a video of Ten Magic Butterflies read aloud by author Danica McKellar, that allows for “shared reading,” an interactive reading experience that occurs when children join in or share the reading of a book or other text while guided and supported by an adult or older experienced reader. The experienced reader explicitly models the skills of proficient readers, including reading with fluency and expression, and engages the child in dialogue throughout the book.
