Our featured book for September 2020 is Same, Same but Different by Jenny Sue Kostecki-Shaw. This book is about Elliot who lives in America and Kailish who lives in India. These two boys learn that they have so much in common through their exchange of letters. They become pen pals and realize that their lives are “same, same but different.” They both enjoy climbing trees, both live with their families, and pets. Elliot learns that Kailish also lived with his family only it is a little bigger than his. In their letter exchanges, they describe the cities that they live in and how they get to school. They become best friends even though they live in different countries.
Below is a video of Same, Same but Different featuring “shared reading,” an interactive reading experience that occurs when children join in or share the reading of a book or other text while guided and supported by an adult or older experienced reader. The experienced reader explicitly models the skills of proficient readers, including reading with fluency and expression, and engages the child in dialogue throughout the book.
