A workshop on poverty in our community
Step Up Suncoast and the Manatee County School District
invite you to participate in Life on the Edge, an interactive experience for individuals
seeking to understand a community problem and contribute to a community solution.
Too many people meet the definition of life on the edge. Poverty, whether generational or situational, is costly to our community in actual cash and in undeveloped assets. Gang violence, teen pregnancy, poor school performance, homelessness, hunger, high taxes and many other problems faced by the community are often the by-products of poverty. Is it really so easy to pull yourself up by your boot straps?
Life on the Edge will begin with a poverty simulation in which participants assume the role of families facing a variety of challenging, but typical circumstances. Some are homeless, others have recently become unemployed, and some are suddenly faced with eviction. After experiencing four, fifteen-minute weeks in which you must ensure that your family is nourished, housed and safe, you will participate in a debriefing to share what you have experienced. You may discover that the skills that have made you successful are not the skills you use when living in poverty.
Please join Step Up Suncoast and the Manatee County School District on Saturday,January 26th. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. and Life on the Edge begins at 9:00 a.m. and ends at 12:00 p.m. As you will be assigned a role in the poverty simulation, we would appreciate your commitment to attend Life on the Edge by contacting Dr. Sheila Halpin at [email protected]
Please RSVP by Tuesday, January 22, 2019
